The original Heathman Hotel 2/9 console

There were two Heathman Hotels located within two blocks of each other in downtown Portland:

  • The original Heathman Hotel opened in 1926. It had a 2/9 Leathurby-Smith theatre organ in the lobby.
  • The "New" Heathman Hotel opened in 1927. The hotel itself did not have an organ, but radio station KOIN, located on the mezzanine level, had a 3/6 Robert Morton installed in its studio.

The two-manual, nine rank designation for the Leathurby-Smith disagrees somewhat with the Junchen opus listing which shows only a 5 rank instrument. The stoplist shown below (taken directly from the console) shows nine ranks. It is possible that the instrument was upgraded after the initial install.

Similar instruments were installed at the Roseway Theatre and the Laurelhurst Theatre.

The Heathman organ went to an Episcopal church in Mt. Angel, Oregon. The original console was sold to a private party. Its current status is unknown. The remainder of the organ was involved in a fire at the church and was removed, being replaced by a Rodgers pipe-combination.

The 3HP Spencer Orgoblo blower survived the fire because it was installed quite a distance from the chamber. It is now owned by Tom Blackwell of Seattle.

The instrument had unique labels for the two expression pedals: "Lobby" and "Dining Room". It is unclear whether there were two chambers or just two sets of shutters.
