As a young man Gunnar was one of the first organists to play the Mt. Baker Theatre Wurlitzer and other instruments in the area including the Lincoln Theatre in Mt. Vernon and the Dream Theatre in Sedro-Woolley. He traveled to Hollywood during its heyday and played at KNX, Fox, Universal Studios and the Beverly Hills Hotel. Gunnar also coached and accompanied Charles Farrell, James Cagney, Regis Toomey and Dick Powell. After a Navy stint, he returned to Bellingham and opened a teaching studio.

Gunnar was very active in promoting use of the organ at the Mt. Baker Theatre and appeared there several nights a week. He also did a radio broadcast from time to time.
